In an apparent first, a flurry of aerial drones recently freed Ukrainian prisoners of war from their Russian captors.

The drone jailbreak came just days after Russian infantry surrendered to a Ukrainian ground robot, underscoring both the growing capability of Ukraine’s robot army and the desperate shortage of Ukrainian infantry all along the 700-mile front line.

In Ukraine’s manpower-starved military, unmanned systems liberate and take prisoners because there aren’t always enough human beings to do the job.

The robot jailbreak played out near the ruins of Russian-controlled Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast, when at least seven Russian troops apparently surprised four Ukrainian troops in a front-line observation post—and took them prisoner.
