A daring counteroffensive led by the Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps has pushed back a pair of Russian field armies just north of the town of Lyman in northern Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. In four heady months, this Operation Vivaldi has erased 18 months of Russian gains along the northern approach to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the last two big free cities in Donetsk.
But there’s a southern approach to the cities, too. And there, the Russians are still on the march. The Russian Center Group of Forces is inching into the town of Dobropillia, a strongpoint on the T0514 highway threading toward Kramatorsk, 22 miles to the northeast.
