Ukraine’s 475th Assault Regiment, waging an active defense in Kharkiv Oblast along Ukraine’s northeast border with Russia, is pioneering new combined-arms tactics—blending up-armored tanks and fighting vehicles with air-to-air and bomber drones.

The vehicles provide the firepower. The drones provide the protection … most importantly from Russian drones. The regiment’s first-person-view drones can swoop down to intercept Russian FPV drones. The regiment’s heavy bomber drones can drop grenades to suppress Russian strongpoints and explode mines and loitering ambush drones parked on the ground.

Equally notable is what the 475th Assault Regiment has done with its American-made M-1 tanks and M-2 fighting vehicles. It’s wrapped the vehicles in so much anti-drone armor that the tanks have become casemate tanks. That is, tanks without turrets.

Ukrainian forces from the 475th Assault Regiment modified one of their Australian-supplied M1A1 Abrams MBTs into a heavily uparmored, casemated assault gun, seen here supporting infantry by sending 120mm rounds into a Russian-held treeline.
