Greenland's Geography Could Help The Danes Defend The Island From Invading Americans

Greenland is huge; its towns and airports are few

On Sunday night, U.S. Pres. Donald Trump made it perfectly clear why he’s determined to seize Greenland from Denmark.

“Considering your Country [sic] decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS [sic], I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace [sic], although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,” Trump wrote in a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

If and when U.S. forces invade Greenland, it’s imperative they be met with stiff resistance. But will they?

Denmark has begun deploying forces to the vast island alongside some of its NATO allies. So far, the major reinforcements seem to comprise roughly 100 Danish light infantry, joining another hundred or so Danish light infantry who were already in Greenland. A Danish warship is nearby.

More Danish and allied forces may be coming. “This will result in an increased military presence in and around Greenland, comprising aircraft, vessels and soldiers, including from NATO allies,” the defense ministry in Copenhagen announced.

So far, the Danes are staging where they should stage to deter—and potentially defeat—an American landing.
