A Ukrainian air force Sukhoi Su-24 armed with a Storm Shadow or SCALP-EG. Ukrainian air force capture

A Sukhoi Su-24 bomber belonging to the Ukrainian air force’s 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade crashed in western Ukraine on June 16, killing both crew.

It was the 22nd loss of a Ukrainian Su-24 since Russia widened its war on Ukraine in February 2022. But it didn’t stop the 7th TAB from conducting one of its biggest and most devastating cruise missile strikes of the wider war just six days later.

On Monday, Su-24s fired as many as 14 British-made Storm Shadow or similar French-made SCALP-EG missiles in at least two salvos, targeting strategic industries in western Russia.

An Su-24 carries no more than two cruise missiles, meaning at least seven of the bombers sortied on Monday. That’s potentially half of the 7th TAB’s active aircraft.
