In Ukraine's Chaotic Southeast, Both Armies Are Advancing At The Same Time
At stake: Zaporizhzhia city
Six weeks into Ukraine’s southeastern counteroffensive, Ukrainian forces are still advancing.
But so are the Russians.
Ukrainian paratroopers from the 95th Air Assault Brigade are pushing east from the town of Pokrovs’ke—and inching toward the Uspenivka, the forward base of the Russian 36th Combined Arms Army.
Meanwhile, Russian troops from the 5th Combined Arms Army are pushing west from the town of Huliaipole, aiming to eject the Ukrainian 225th Assault Regiment from its fortifications around the village of Zaliznyczne.
At stake: the free city of Zaporizhzhia, 50 miles to the west.
