Bad weather is good for Russian marine corps mechanized units trying to capture the village of Shakhove, just northeast of the fortress city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine. Rain, clouds and fog can ground the drones that are Ukrainian forces’ first line of defense against Russian attacks.

But the Russians’ reliance on the worsening winter weather to ease their march on Shakhove has backfired on them. On Saturday, a Russian armored column—an up-armored turtle tank leading at least a platoon of armored personnel carriers—drove right into the rain-swollen Kazenyi Torets River, one after the other … and sank.

The Ukrainians had blown the bridge across the river just east of Pankivka, one of the hamlets on the road toward Shakhove. That channeled the Russians into the river instead of over it.
