A BMP-2M in the air defense role

by DAVID AXE

Ukrainian drone units continue to pummel Russian forces’ overland supply lines threading across occupied southern Ukraine into Crimea. The Russians are scrambling to stiffen their air defenses against these so-called “middle strikes.”

They’ve even pressed the upgraded BMP-2M infantry fighting vehicle into duty as self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. A poor man’s Gepard.

The BMP-2M lacks the radar that makes the Gepard and similar vehicles so accurate, but the Russian vehicle does have infrared sensors. It isn’t a terrible SPAAG. But it’s also not a great SPAAG—and it’s vulnerable to the very same middle-strike drones it’s supposed to shoot down.
