Russian Marines Are Literally Dying To Reverse Ukraine's Southeastern Counteroffensive
The 40th Naval Infantry Brigade and other Russian reinforcements are rushing into an expanding gray zone
According to Unit Mapper, the Russians are surging more reinforcements to southeastern Ukraine in a desperate bid to roll back the Ukrainian counteroffensive that kicked off a month ago amid a breakdown in Russian communications.
The reinforcements from the Russian marine corps and 68th Army Corps rolled into battle on March 7—and promptly got killed. It was an inauspicious start to Russia’s countercounteroffensive.
A Ukrainian thermal drone was watching as the Russian 40th Naval Infantry Brigade deployed an up-armored tank, an infantry fighting vehicle and at least one light vehicle for an assault west of Huliaipole, once the locus of the fighting in Zaporizhzhia Oblast in the southeast.
The assault group got as far as Huliaipole’s northwestern neighborhoods before the Ukrainians struck with drones and artillery. The Ukrainian 5th Separate Assault Brigade, 225th Separate Assault Regiment and 414th Unmanned Systems Forces Brigade struck the tank and the IFV and scattered the surviving infantry.
