A very strange and very rare engineering vehicle, modified by Ukrainian forces to speedily lay down razor wire, isn’t long for this world.

Its mission is crucial. But very, very dangerous. And robots are taking over.

The aging BTM-3 trenching vehicle appeared in a video that circulated on social media this week. In its standard configuration, the vehicle combines a T-54 tank chassis with an unarmored cabin and an excavator arm.

Its main function is to dig trenches. But Ukrainian forces need razor wire more than they need trenches, so they removed the excavator from this one BTM-3 and installed racks for coils of wire. Stake one end of a coil to the ground and the rest will unspool as the BTM-3 drives away.
