Ukrainian Troops Counterattack Near Lyman
The goal: to cut across a Russian salient pointed at Sloviansk
Russia’s main objective in Ukraine this year is to capture Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the last two big free cities in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast. The Russians’ main effort is from the south. But they could also drive on Sloviansk from the north.
But the northern approach first means marching through Lyman, 10 miles north of Sloviansk. And the Ukrainians aren’t just sitting around waiting for the Russians to move. On Friday, the Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps counterattacked north of Lyman.
The aim of that counterattack was to cut across a five-mile-by-five-mile salient jutting into the battleground north of Lyman. The Russians are pouring troops into the salient, clearly aiming to surround and isolate Lyman instead of directly assaulting it.
